Yesterday, I had a long drawn out conversation with a good friend. He said " I don't like X's writing at all. It is hollow. It doesn't take me anywhere, I feel like I've wasted my time after reading it. It seems that X has just arranged a bunch of complex words together that don't even look good together. " Perhaps, this is indeed the case. I tried defending X but failed pretty miserably and so I went back to hostel and in retrospect decided that I should've framed things better and scribbled this. I don't discount criticism because every writer grows only because of criticism but in the grand scheme of things, perhaps, we should learn to just appreciate. And to the good friend, if you're reading this, I'm pretty sure you know it's nothing personal.
I just want to know what the world thinks.
"Writing, to me, is very personal. However disconnected my stories seem from my personal life, each and every thread of thought has been picked carefully from the myriad of experiences I amass every single day. And I believe, it isn't fair to compare writing, especially of amateurs.
Writing is an art. It is your own personal expression. It is your observation of the world and the way you would like to share it with the people around you. Writing is about interpretation. You open up a new window of thought and you just leave it there. People will look through, like what they see or maybe not. But they will at least look through that window you created. Writing is creating an identity. You can’t take your writing away from who you are and nor can you assume a new form because despite all your efforts to be a different person in your writing, you will end up baring the deepest recesses of your soul to the world.
To write is to be vulnerable. You are ready to expose your ideas and what more could be more intimate than your thoughts? To write is to have courage. You introspect and face your demons and tackle them with all your might. To write is to take risk. It is an open invitation for everyone to visit your inner sanctuary and disagree with your beliefs. To write is unleash a monster, a destructive volley of words that can ruin you. To write is to open a bottle of perfume and share the wonderful scent with those around you by using your words wisely. To write is to define your feelings and recapture the untethered emotions your heart can house. To write is to escape, lose yourself in a world that you created, where you belong. To write is also about finding yourself. To discover that beyond all that hurt and reasoning, there is a golden ball of warmth waiting to feed your kindness to others.
To write is to connect pen and paper, connect your soul with others, to paint on a canvas of feelings, to let your thoughts dance to its own tune, unrestricted, wild, and free. To write is to add color to misery. To write is to sing along to the words of an unknown song. To write, is to gain perspective as well as give it.
To write is to love yourself unconditionally."
I hope you take a moment henceforth before you trash someone else's writing as I'm sure it is as dear to them as my writing is to me. Criticize but don't be caustic, because after all, they're trying to find a place in this world just like you.
